Essential Tips for Boosting Kids' Immune Systems before Returning to School

Are your kids ashy legs just as bad a coconut husk? It's the sign of a good summer. A right of passage for kids who play hard, and sleep hard. The ashy dry skin around their knees and elbows don't bother them as much as it bothers this mama! —if you know how to get the kids to hate the itch of dry skin, let me know!— It would be much better if they could apply their skincare themselves, but if you have a child under the age of 10 then it's a miracle if this is not a household issue.

I have always doused my son in tallow since he was a newborn. As an infant, it was the scent free tallow and as he got a little older, I began using the Lavender and Frankincense as well as the body oil. His skin has always had a nice glow, and I've prided myself that his internal hydration was helping the dry skin. I feel blessed that he never had any of the rashes, eczema, or skin concerns so many of his little friends had experienced. I attributed this to the oodles amount of tallow I would put on him.

The summer is really all about drinking as much water as possible.  Copious amounts of watermelon, electrolytes, juice popsicles are all helpful in keeping the kids hydrated, and a healthy dose of fresh greens in their smoothies to help detox the amount of lake water, or pool water they swallow—cue the parasite cleanse this fall!

I'm already getting the back to school emails and as a homeschooling mama, I proudly hit delete as I let my ego take over—cause' I had our curriculum planned in the Spring!

But what I don't have planned is how I'm going to handle the back to school germs that always hit us at the end of September.  There are seasons where we're sniffling all month long, and seasons that our immune symptoms are like a fortified wall that nothing can get through! I know the importance of a healthy and robust immune system, and so starting now, I'm preparing for that end of September germ attack.

Four of the easiest ways I have found to help support our immune system are:

  1. Applying Topical Magnesium on the spine and to the bottom of the feet every night.
  2. Drinking 1/2 to all of our body weight in oz of water. I have found my son can do this easily— it's harder for me!
  3. Sneaking in Greens in all of our smoothies.
  4. and herbal tinctures.

Topical magnesium can offer significant benefits to the immune system when absorbed through the skin. Magnesium is a vital mineral that plays a crucial role in numerous bodily functions, including immune response regulation. When applied topically, magnesium is absorbed directly into the bloodstream and can help strengthen the immune system by promoting the production of immune cells and enhancing their function. It aids in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, which are common factors that can weaken the immune system. Additionally, topical magnesium can improve sleep quality, reduce stress, and promote relaxation, all of which contribute to overall immune system support. By incorporating topical magnesium into their wellness routine, individuals can harness the immune-boosting properties of this essential mineral and enhance their body's natural defense mechanisms against infections and illnesses.

Keeping the skin hydrated with essential nutrients in skincare is not only beneficial for maintaining a radiant complexion but also plays a pivotal role in supporting the immune system. The skin serves as a vital barrier that protects the body from external threats, including harmful pathogens and environmental pollutants. When the skin is adequately hydrated, it maintains its integrity and functions optimally, effectively preventing these harmful elements from entering the body. Essential nutrients, such as vitamins C, E, and A, along with minerals like zinc, are known for their potent antioxidant properties and their ability to nourish the skin.

By providing the skin with these nutrients through skincare products, we strengthen its defenses against free radicals, which can weaken the immune system. Moreover, well-hydrated and nourished skin enhances its ability to produce antimicrobial peptides, contributing to the body's first line of defense against infections. Ultimately, by prioritizing proper skincare with essential nutrients, we not only achieve a healthy and glowing complexion but also empower our immune system to function optimally and protect us from potential health challenges.

Encourage a Balanced Diet:

A well-balanced diet is the foundation for a healthy immune system. Make sure your child's meals include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Include immune-boosting foods such as citrus fruits, berries, leafy greens, yogurt, garlic, and nuts in their daily meals. These foods provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support the immune system's functioning.

Prioritize Regular Exercise:

Regular physical activity not only strengthens muscles and bones but also enhances the immune system. Encourage your child to engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each day. It could be as simple as going for a walk, riding a bike, or participating in sports activities. Exercise improves circulation, increases the production of immune cells, and reduces the risk of infections.

Ensure Sufficient Sleep:

Adequate sleep is vital for children's immune health. Establish a consistent sleep schedule and ensure your child gets the recommended hours of sleep for their age. Quality sleep helps regulate immune responses and boosts the production of infection-fighting antibodies. Create a calm and comfortable sleep environment, limit screen time before bed, apply topical magnesium to the back of their neck, spine, or feet, and encourage relaxation techniques to promote a good night's sleep.

Promote Hygiene Practices:

Teach your child the importance of good hygiene habits to prevent the spread of germs. Emphasize regular handwashing with soap and water, especially before meals and after using the restroom. Encourage the use of hand sanitizers when soap is unavailable. Teach them to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or their elbow when coughing or sneezing. Additionally, instill the habit of not touching their face, as it reduces the chances of transferring germs from their hands to their mouth or eyes.

Provide Adequate Hydration:

Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining a healthy immune system. Ensure your child drinks plenty of water throughout the day. Hydration helps transport nutrients, flush out toxins, and keep the mucous membranes in the respiratory tract moist, enhancing their defense against pathogens. Teach them to apply a little moisture, with a tallow balm, to the inside of their nostrils to act as a line of defense to allergens and germs.  Limit the consumption of sugary drinks and opt for water, herbal teas, and natural fruit juices instead.

Supplement with Essential Nutrients:

Sometimes, it may be challenging for children to get all the necessary nutrients solely through their diet. Consider supplementing their nutrition with age-appropriate multivitamins or specific immune-boosting supplements. Vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and probiotics are often recommended to support immune health. If it’s a struggle to get these vitamins in, consider using a topical magnesium balm and nutrient-dense moisturizer to help up their levels.

Manage Stress Levels:

Chronic stress can weaken the immune system, making children more susceptible to infections. Help your child manage stress by encouraging relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, or engaging in hobbies they enjoy. Create a supportive and nurturing environment at home, fostering open communication and providing emotional support.

As parents, we play a major role in safeguarding our children's health, and fortifying their immune systems before returning to school is essential. Sometimes I have to remember it's the intention that counts. Life with kids can be a roller coaster and you can go to bed wondering if you did anything successful in the day. Findning your methods are whats key. If you're focusing on a natural approach it can be quite easy by just focusing on one or two things that you stay consistent on.

Let's prioritize their well-being and equip them with the tools to face the challenges ahead with a robust immune system.
