The Art Of Double Cleansing

Double cleaning is when you wash your face twice before bed. The first time is to lift the makeup, sunscreen, dirt, and buildup of pollutants that sit on the surface of your face, and the second cleaning is to wash it all away, so your pores are left clear. The traditional way in ancient Japanese culture was to cleanse with an oil base like jojoba or olive oil to remove paint from their face, then incorporate a second cleanse with a foaming agent to remove sweat and dirt.

The benefit of double cleansing is that the first cleanser will break down any makeup, remove dirt and excess oils from the day and clean your skin. The second cleanser will address your particular skin type or concern and should have ingredients to hydrate, smooth, or exfoliate and treat acne.

Oil dissolves oil. One of the most basic principles of chemistry is that “like dissolves like.” The best way to dissolve a non-polar solvent like sebum/oil is by using another non-polar solvent similar in composition: Other oils. Using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively, while replacing the dirty oil with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals, vegetables and fruit that heal, protect and nourish your skin. When done properly and consistently, the OCM can clear the skin from issues like oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne–while leaving your skin healthy, balanced and properly moisturized.

Benefits of Double Cleansing

Lifts dirt and makeup - a common new word next to the skin is grits. It seems odd, but what skincare enthusiasts are referring to are the extractions that come to the surface after an oil cleanse or a facial clay mask. You can get profound pore cleansing benefits by leaving the oil on your skin overnight and then washing your face in the morning. However, do not do this every night, as oil does strip your skin of oil. The best way to get rid of blackheads and clogged pores is by cleansing your face every night with a bit of oil (Hafen Beauty Body Oil)  and then using a warm washcloth to wipe it away.

Better absorption - Once your skin is clean from dirt, sweat, and makeup, your pores are more available to accept the healing properties of your skincare routine.  It is common to feel that your skin is not absorbing your oils and creams very well. It could very well be that your skin needs cleansing before you treat your face or apply moisturizers.

Supports Hydration - Skin needs hydration the same way our organs do. Drinking plenty of water is the best way to keep your skin hydrated, however applying your moisturizers after cleansing your skin from oils and dirt, your skin will absorb the moisturizers immediately.

Overall Skin Health - Skin is the largest organ of our body. Incorporating a cleansing ritual will keep our skin glowing and aid in supporting overall skin and body health by keeping toxins out.

Types of Skin and how to apply moisturizer after double cleansing

Dry Skin - If you have dry skin, start small. Apply a dime-size amount of oil to a warm wet washcloth and gently wash your face. Using a small amount of oil allows your skin to slowly bring in the oil without overwhelming it with too much, thus making your skin drier. After cleansing with the warm washcloth, wash your face with lukewarm or cold water to complete the second cleansing. Pat dry, leaving a little moisture on. While skin is still damp, apply your toner and hyaluronic acid.  Once absorbed, add a dab of tamanu oil on most dry areas. Complete your routine by adding your Body Balm. Lock in all the moisture with a small amount of body oil. A little goes a long way.

Oily  Skin - Balancing your natural sebum production should be your priority if you are prone to oily skin. Oily skin could be a symptom of dehydration, and your skin is making up for it. For oily skin, using the Hafen Beauty body oil to cleanse and complete the routine with a small amount of Body balm will help regulate oil production while still giving you hydration and a natural glow.

Normal Skin - Keeping a natural glow can be accomplished by keeping skin cleansed and hydrated. Balanced Skin types should double cleanse using oil as their cleanser, wiping it off with a warm washcloth, and finishing the cleanse by washing lukewarm water or cold water to their face before pat drying it off. Once cleansed, adding toner and serum with HA will help keep skin naturally glowing. Adding a treatment serum like tamanu oil will keep the skin toned. Completing the regimen with a body balm that holds vitamin A, D, E and K will promote healthy skin.  Complete with a vitamin C body oil for collagen support and a beautiful glow.

Sensitive Skin - Sensitive skin needs a dense base of nutrient oil. Using a balm that includes grass-fed tallow will help keep skin nourished gently. Sensitive skin types are prone to inflammation and acne even with a bit of change in their routine. It is encouraged to keep skin cleansed by using a small amount of oil to a warm washcloth and then rinsing with lukewarm or cold water. Applying a small amount of Hafen Beauty Balm will moisturize and treat gently without causing redness or flareups.
